Feb 8th Notes: Richard Marciano

Richard Marciano presented and discussed his work on T-RACES.

The T-RACES Project started when Richard and the DICE group were still at the San Diego Supercomputing center. The project maps HOLC redlining maps of several California cities into the .kml format for display within programs such as Google Earth or on the web via Google Maps.

Richard demonstrated the system and its extensive connection to the underlying documentation. The image below links to his website and documentation.

After presenting the system, Richard discussed various topics with the audience including map layers production for research, data interchange formats for historical data, and general interoperability issues for systems such as T-RACES.  Richard also discussed how work on social justice issues becomes more difficult as the period being studied gets closer to the present.
